Brass band champions boost choir’s centenary concert

A WORLD famous brass band will be performing in Hull on Saturday as part of a city choir’s centenary celebrations.

The Brighouse and Rastrick Band, which last week retained its title as the Champion Band of Great Britain in a competition in front of an audience of 3,500 at the Royal Albert Hall, will be on stage at Hull City Hall on Saturday as the guests of Hull Male Voice Choir.

The Sounds of Celebration concert will also feature a mass male voice choir of more than 120 singers, including choristers from the Beverley and Driffield male voice choirs.

Terry Wallis, Hull Male Voice Choir’s assistant musical director, who will compere the evening, said: “We are proud and delighted that our guest artists at our Sounds of Celebration concert will be the fabulous Brighouse and Rastrick Band.

“Shortly after we booked them they won the most prestigious title of 2010 Champion Band of Great Britain and for them to win it again just a week before our concert is an absolute bonus.

“We are so thrilled that our audience will have the opportunity to hear this famous band, which won the 2011 competition by a considerable margin I understand, having played the test piece Breath of Souls composed by Paul Lovatt-Cooper.”

Mr Wallis said he was hoping for a capacity crowd for the charity concert, which will raise funds for Help for Heroes and the Hull-based Dove House Hospice.
