Brave mother to run for cancer charity after battling disease

Emma Raper will be running the Jane Tomlinson Run For All Hull 10K for Yorkshire Cancer Research, on June 3.

Ms Raper, 40, from Hessle, said: “Who would have thought this time last year I would be running a 10k for Yorkshire Cancer Research?

“I had just finished chemotherapy, had no hair and was still feeling pretty miserable.

“Leaving hospital, after being an in-patient for six weeks, on the day of Prince William and Kate’s wedding, I was determined to be well enough to attend our street party. Their anniversary is a very poignant memory for me.”

Launched in 2009, the Jane Tomlinson Run For All Hull 10K brings together thousands of runners, joggers, and walkers, from across East Yorkshire, the region and beyond.

Ms Raper, a dental health educator, said about the run: “I am very excited but slightly apprehensive about the race as my body is still recovering from chemotherapy.

“However, the memory of many lovely people I have met while having my treatment, who are no longer here, will keep me motivated.”

Ms Raper, who will be running with two of her friends, said: “I am slightly worried as they have both been training. Although, if all else fails, I hope one of them will give me a piggy back.”

She added: “Raising money for Yorkshire Cancer research is my way of hopefully assisting in the research and cure for future generations of people with this disease.”

The mother-of-two, is currently half way through a two-year maintenance programme which she attends every eight weeks for antibody infusion.

Of her children, Oliver, 11 and Lottie, eight, she said: ”My children have been so supportive and loving throughout this time.”
