A HEROIC father and son duo who tackled a bag snatcher in a South Yorkshire town centre have been given an award for their bravery.

Shaun Broadhurst and his 21-year-old son Kane run a tattoo studio in Rotherham town centre and took action after a pensioner was attacked by a mugger close to their shop.

The victim, in her late 70s, had her bag snatched while she was sitting on a bench in All Saints Square, and although she was unable to give chase, she alerted several passers-by.

Some of them began to follow the 19-year-old thief and as they passed the Broadhursts’ tattoo shop in Red Lion Yard, the father and son team became aware of what was happening.

They also chased the offender, eventually catching up with him in nearby Effingham Street, retrieving the bag, calling the police and holding on to the teenager until officers arrived.

The bag and its contents were returned undamaged by police officers to the grateful pensioner and the mugger was arrested and charged later that day.

Mr Broadhurst, 41, was joined by his son and young daughter Millie when he was presented with his police commendation at Rotherham Police Station by Chief Supt Richard Tweed.

Mr Tweed said: “Without a thought for their own personal safety, Shaun and Kane pursued and apprehended the offender, ensuring his arrest.”

“On behalf of South Yorkshire Police, I would like to commend them both for their quick reactions and showing great community spirit.”

The 19-year-old Rotherham man who carried out the offence was convicted of the theft earlier in the summer and jailed for 12 weeks
