Break the ice in 'Great Snow Debate'

AFTER this winter's heavy snowfall, a consultation is being launched in Sheffield on what should be done during similarly wintry weather in the future.

The exercise, dubbed "Sheffield's Great Snow Debate", will involve asking people if they would volunteer as "community snow wardens" and drawing up plans for "community gritting points" across the city.

Sheffield Council leader Paul Scriven said gritting every road in the city would cost a total of 8m – as opposed to 2m for only main roads and bus routes. Changing the city's policy to this effect would mean a three per cent increase in council tax, he added. "Instead, we've thought about other, more affordable, ways to keep the city moving when snow strikes again," he said.
