Bricklayer sets sights on global title

a BRICKLAYER from Barnsley has been crowned the best in the country.

Jason Whitehead could now get a chance to take on the rest of the world at the World SkillBuild bricklaying championships in Germany next year.

He beat off stiff competition from 10 other finalists to win first place in his category in a three-day final at Preston College.

The event is the biggest international skills competition in the world and is held every two years. The competition sees around 1,000 young people aged 18-23 compete for medals in more than 40 different trade areas.

The 20-year-old from Hoyland, who attends Barnsley College and is employed by Barratt Developments, said: “I’m absolutely delighted - it’s great to have won. The competition was tough, but it’s been worth all the hard work and preparation.”

Wayne Sutton, contracts manager for Barratt Yorkshire West Apprentices said: “Jason is a joy to work with. We have every faith in his continued success and wish him luck for the global competition.”
