Bridge construction delayed as winds deliver a blow to engineering endeavour

During the 48-hours granted to engineers by Network Rail over the Christmas railway stoppage, “extreme” weather conditions meant that only one of the six bridge beams could be safely lifted into place.

The new bridge is part of the first phase of improvements to Doncaster’s White Rose Way.

Gill Gillies, Doncaster Council’s assistant director of environment, said: “Given the scale and complexity of the operation, the programme of works was greatly disrupted by consistently high wind speeds which aren’t always noticeable at ground level.

“Years of planning have gone into building up to this critical milestone so this is a major setback. Unfortunately, we can’t control the British weather.

“Negotiations have started with Network Rail and other parties to find new dates for the bridge lifts.

“These works along the A6182 White Rose Way are vital for stimulating further investment and economic growth.”

A council spokesman added that the first phase of works on White Rose Way should still be completed by November.

The full scheme will see a dual carriageway running from junction 3 of the M18 into Doncaster town centre.
