Bridge gets temporary reprieve

Scarborough Council shut the footbridge, which links the West Pier and the West Pier extension, at the beginning of September over safety fears, after an investigation revealed that it had deteriorated beyond repair.

The decision sparked a protest of more than 300 people last week.

They accused the council of neglecting the town.

Now contractors have started assembling a £10,000 120cm-wide walkway, which will span the existing structure without putting any pressure on it.

The work is expected to be finished by tomorrow.

After that the bridge will be re-opened.

The money to pay for the temporary measure has been found from Whitby Harbour Board reserves while the council considers tenders for a more permanent solution.

The chairman of Whitby Harbour Board, Councillor Mike Cockerill, said: “It is pleasing to see work start on installing the temporary walkway and I’m sure it will be welcomed in Whitby by locals and visitors to the town.”
