Bridge upkeep changes hands
NORTH Yorkshire County Council is to take over the spiralling maintenance costs of Whitby’s ageing Swing Bridge.
The upkeep of the bridge, which is now more than 100 years old, has been shared between the county council and Scarborough Borough Council for the past 28 years.
But it was agreed yesterday at a meeting of the Whitby Harbour Board that responsibility for maintenance and repair be passed on and for the borough council to pay for the daily running of the bridge.
