Bridge work recovers after weather delays

Work to remove and replace a 145-year-old bridge carrying trains of the North Yorkshire Moors Railway continued over the weekend.

Workmen have used thermic lances, cutting tools that burn through iron, to cut away sections of Bridge 30 between Goathland and Grosmont but the old iron work is proving tougher than expected. A crane was brought in to lift the bridge parts as they were cut away but recent bad weather meant delays.

Railway managers want the replacement bridge in place before the main running season begins on March 27. A campaign has begun to raise the 650,000 needed to pay for the work.
