Bright new idea for road bollards

The bollards are highly reflective and use a solar panel to provide power for specially designed, high capacity LED lights. They also have a special coating to prevent the build up of dirt from passing traffic, Kirklees Council said yesterday

They are an environmentally-friendly alternative to lit bollards.

Kirklees currently has over 2,000 illuminated bollards and has recently trialled 200 of the new solar bollards on Trinity Street, Huddersfield and Huddersfield Road, in Mirfield, through to Ravensthorpe.

Coun David Sheard, the council's cabinet member for highways and streetscene, said: "Traditional bollards have a number of drawbacks which include the cost of keeping them lit and the need for a power source. The new bollards mean that substantial savings can be made in both replacement, energy consumption and maintenance costs as well as there being no need to connect them to a power source. They are easier to install and can be used anywhere."
