British boy killed in skiing tragedy is named

Carwyn Scott-Howell, of Talybont-on-Usk in Brecon, Wales, was skiing alone when he became lost and fell around 160 feet from a rocky outcrop in the resort of Flaine on Friday afternoon.

He had been skiing with his mother, brother and sister but asked to ski the final descent of the day by himself.

When he failed to make it to the bottom of the slopes his family raised the alarm.

Police began a frantic search which ended with the discovery of his body some three-and-a-half hours later.

Michel Ollagnon, an officer with the Bonneville mountain rescue service, said the boy’s body was spotted off his expected course by rescuers in a helicopter in the early evening.

Police chief Patrick Poirot, the head of the mountain rescue division in the nearby town of Annecy, said: “Specialists are at the scene to try and determine exactly what happened and understand every element that led to this tragedy.

“Hypothetically we think that after losing his parents, the little boy didn’t know where to go and skied in the wrong direction.”

A Foreign Office spokeswoman confirmed the death of the British boy and said: “We are providing consular assistance to the family at this difficult time.”
