Britons failing to save more despite recession

Only four out of 10 people have increased the amount they save as a result of the recession, a survey has shown.

Just 38 per cent of those questioned said they were now setting aside more money than before the economic downturn, according to business advisory firm Deloitte.

Two-thirds said they were more aware of their personal finances than they were two years ago but only 49 per cent are focusing on reducing their debt at a faster rate than before the downturn.

Six out of 10 people said they were now more concerned about how safe their bank was than they were two years ago, 18 per cent having moved some or all of their savings to an institution they thought was more secure.

A further 54 per cent said they were less willing to lock up their savings for longer periods, while 21 per cent have made sure they do not have more than 50,000 deposited with any one institution.

YouGov questioned 2,000 people during September.
