Broadband review aims to improve rural links

A review has been launched to ensure a better broadband network in one of North Yorkshire's most rural areas.

Hambleton Council announced it was undertaking the review over concerns about the inconsistency of internet speeds across the district, many areas being unable to get any broadband at all.

Despite superfast broadband being increasingly seen as vital to future economic growth, Yorkshire currently has the lowest rates of internet connection in the country.

Only 64 per cent of people in the region are online compared with a national average of 71 per cent and vast swathes of North Yorkshire are particularly badly served.

The community planning manager for Hambleton Council, Sam Swinbank, said: "This is crucial to the future of the district and the quality of life for residents and we need to get this right.

"We currently have a number of 'Not Spots' in the district where people are unable to get any high speed broadband at all and this is a real issue.

"We are looking at new community broadband schemes and at what public and private investment is available

"This is definitely an important issue for residents and we are very excited about getting this launched."

The Hambleton Strategic Partnership, which is leading the review, is conducting an on-line survey for residents to say what is needed to be put in place.

Chairman Rosemary Taylor said: "Access to high speed broadband is crucial to help improve the quality of life of people living and working in rural communities..

"I hope our residents get involved in the survey to help us identify a solution."
