Brown bin compost success hailed

MORE than 4,400 tonnes of garden, food, and cardboard waste was sent for composting in the East Riding last month, following the roll out of the new council brown bin collections.

For the second month running the recycling rate was 55 per cent, prompting East Riding Council to praise residents for their efforts.

Coun Symon Fraser, portfolio holder for environment, housing and planning, said: “This is a brilliant result by our residents. It shows just how enthusiastic our residents are when you compare that 4,400 tonnes with the 3,800 tonnes collected from the brown bins in June last year.

“The additional tonnes are being sent for composting instead of going to landfill, saving taxpayers the increasing costs of landfill tax, and protecting the environment.”

The council said the monthly recycling figures were among some of the best in the country.

The monthly recycling figure is based on the waste collected from wheelie bins, the 10 household waste recycling sites and the 140 “bring” recycling sites across the East Riding.

The council’s roll out of caddies is now complete and the recycling figure is expected to increase slightly over summer.
