BT gets ready for price war over television sport

BT LOOKS set to start a price war with rivals over TV's top sporting occasions in a move that could cut the cost of watching football and cricket.

The communications and media giant indicated it is prepared to charge customers about 15 a month for Sky Sports 1, some 10 less than its main competitors.

BT Retail chief executive Gavin Patterson said: “The case is crystal clear – the customer benefits if they get more choice.”

Media regulator Ofcom is expected to give its verdict on such proposals in March following an investigation into television pricing.

Experts believe Ofcom will tell Sky to reduce what it currently charges rivals for access to services such as Sky Sports and Sky Movies.

This could then open the way for Virgin Media and BT to pass on the reduction and cut the prices of the premium cable and broadband channels.
