A bug’s life for youngsters as top chef cooks up a locust meal

DOZENS of youngsters got a true taste of the insect world, after eating an array of freshly cooked bugs at Fountains Abbey.

Up to 60 schoolchildren from Harrogate and Markington took part in the event, tasting edible insects, listening to a talk about sustainability and hunting for them in the grounds of the National Trust property led by a team of entomologists.

The insects were prepared by Lionel Strub, chef patron of the Mirabelle restaurant in Harrogate.

The event, held yesterday, was one of scores to mark National Insect Week across Yorkshire.

Dr Luke Tilley, National Insect Week co-ordinator, said: “The event at Fountains Abbey was great for the children and a novel way for them to learn more about our Great British insects.”
