Building awards scheme to help safeguard moorland

AN AWARDS scheme is being launched to help protect the North York Moors by recognising the achievement of designers who create buildings that blend in with their sensitive surroundings.

The public is being invited to submit entries for the best home, best extension and most outstanding non-residential building built in the national park during the last two years.

The aim is not only to recognise and reward outstanding design and construction, but to inspire excellence in the design of future buildings within the sensitive moorland.

The North York Moors National Park Authority's planning officer, Barry Hearsey, said: "The awards build on the general principles of design contained in the authority's design guide.

"The guide highlights the qualities and the variations in character that make the buildings within the North York Moors so special and distinctive.

"Applications will be assessed against a range of criteria including the appearance, landscaping, sustainability and design quality of the development as well as its overall contribution to the landscape setting of the national park."

The deadline for suggestions to the North York Moors National Park Authority's inaugural Design Awards Scheme 2010 is Tuesday, June 1.
