Building work to start at primaries

Work will start at Doncaster’s Kirk Sandall junior school this month and projects will begin at four other schools in the town shortly afterwards.

A new multi-purpose hall will be built under a £1.7m scheme at Kirk Sandall, with similar schemes following at Saltersgate Junior School and Town Field Primary School.

Primary schools at Carcroft and Owston Park will also undergo what Doncaster Council described as “significant refurbishment” under its Primary Capital Programme.

The authority said the five schools had been identified as “early priorities” for the programme, aimed at improving buildings and reduce surplus places.

Cash for the building work has been provided under the Building Schools for the Future scheme, which was dramatically scaled back by the coalition Government after the General Election.

Adrian Bagnall, headteacher at Kirk Sandall Junior School, said: “The pupils, staff and friends in our community are thrilled about our build. We recognise how lucky we are to be one of the few projects still going ahead.

“At Kirk Sandall, we are proud of our achievements in sport, music and drama but have always found our hall far too small.

Now, not only are we getting the new school hall we have been seeking for so long, we are also going to have a new library, music room and kitchen.”

Coun Andrea Milner, Doncaster Council’s schools spokesman, said: “The primary capital programme will see significant investment in five of our primary and junior schools.

“This will help create the right environment for our young people to receive a world class education.”
