Bulls backing youth project

The Bradford Bulls are backing a new police scheme to help keep young people out of trouble.

Young people in Wyke are being given the chance to be trained by a professional rugby coach as part of the project by the local Neighbourhood Policing Team (NPT).

The Bulls and Wyke ARLFC have lent their support to a series of evenings aimed at diverting young people away from the potential of anti-social behaviour and into positive activities.

Pc John Thornton and Police Community Support Officer Denis Bennett, of the Tong and Wyke NPT, have pioneered the rugby project which is open to local girls and boys of all ages.

It is hoped the scheme will be of particular benefit during the school summer holidays.

Pc Thornton said: "The school holidays are traditionally a time when issues of anti social behaviour can increase. This is often because young people have little to do and become bored.

"If this project enables youngsters to channel their energy and focus their minds, then it can only achieve positive results. The training will be skills based with a series of mini-rugby games. We will cater for everyone's needs and help them to understand the disciplines required in the sport.

"We are really lucky to have the support of training staff from both the Bradford Bulls and the Wyke Rugby Club who will bring with them some professional knowledge."

The events will take place every Monday at Wyke Recreation Park between 6pm and 8pm, from July 19.

PCSO Bennett said: "We will be able to engage with those who attend the events and build positive relationships with the young people who live in the local neighbourhoods. It is also a chance for young people to ask any questions they may have about policing in their community."
