Burglary arrest for ‘free runners’

POLICE are warning of the dangers of “free running” after four teenagers were arrested on suspicion of attempted burglary after climbing up a building.

Police were called to commercial premises in Queen Street, Bridlington, just after at 6.30pm on Tuesday after four people were seen climbing up the outside of the property.

Boys aged 14, 16 and two aged 17 were arrested.

There was no sign of a break-in and when questioned the boys said they were free running – an urban sports craze which involves, running, climbing, and jumping across public buildings as if on an obstacle course.

The practice is not illegal and the boys were released without charge, but police said it was dangerous and warned against it.

Det Sgt Tom Napier, of Humberside Police, said: “Whilst no offences were committed on this occasion there are obvious risks attached to such activities and it is also very likely to be deemed as anti-social behaviour.

“There is also a risk of damage being caused to buildings which are being used for the free running, which is clearly a criminal offence.

“Police will intervene if any cases are brought to light and I would strongly advise against taking part in this sort of activity.”

Free running was developed from the French training discipline Parkour.
