Burial plot proposals are unveiled

PLANS to provide more than 2,000 burial plots in a Yorkshire city to last the next century will be showcased later this month.

Harrogate Borough Council has drawn up proposals to extend Ripon’s existing cemetery amid predictions the current site on Kirkby Road will be full within the next two years.

A site on Little Harries Lane – which is about 400 yards from the current cemetery – has been chosen for the extension.

This is expected to cost £210,000 and is due to be completed towards the end of next year.

A public meeting will be held on Tuesday July 26 between 3.30pm and 7.30pm at Ripon Town Hall .

Borough council officers and consultants from Cemetery Development Services will present the plans and discuss the implications.

The borough council joined forces with Ripon City Council to examine several options for the cemetery extension.

The Little Harries Lane location was selected as the preferred site towards the end of last year despite fears that the location was too isolated.

The other options were abandoned because of problems including concerns over ground water levels.
