Bus firm organises month of safety tips

BUS users all around West Yorkshire are to be given advice about how to stay safe as part of a month-long scheme being organised by transport operator First.

Passenger Safety Month has been designed to highlight all the things people can do to ensure they stay safe when using the bus.

Trained teams of staff will be visiting bus stations across West Yorkshire this week to pass on advice and tips on how to stay safe when travelling by bus.

Richard Harris, commercial director for First in West and North Yorkshire, said: "The safety and security of our passengers and staff is central to everything we do.

''During November this message will be further highlighted as we intend to run a series of internal and external events across the region, raising awareness of all the things people can do to ensure their stay safe while travelling on our buses.

"We hope Passenger Safety Month will be well received by our customers and stakeholders.

"If it is it may well become a permanent fixture in our calendar – helping to raise awareness of all the simple things we can each do to make journeys better for everyone."

The schedule includes: Today – Bradford Bus Station; Wednesday – Halifax Bus Station; Thursday – Huddersfield Bus Station.

Timed to start as the evenings draw in the advice being offered ranges from how customers can alert bus drivers to any special requirements they may have – for instance needing extra time to find a seat – to providing information about how to avoid slips, trips and falls while on or near vehicles.

Through the campaign, bus drivers are also being reminded about the advanced safe driving techniques they are taught in an attempt to improve service.

First has also produced more than 15,000 safe journey wallets for older customers and 2,000 reflective stickers for children which will be given away during November.
