Bus firms to honour race-day tickets

THOUSANDS of race-goers are being given an easier passage to meetings at York's historic Knavesmire course under a ground-breaking deal which will begin this weekend.

An agreement has been signed between the three main bus operators in the city, including First, Transdev and York Pullman, which will mean that the firms will now accept each other's return tickets on shuttle services running on race days.

It is hoped that the agreement will help encourage more race-goers to take public transport by making it easier and more accessible while simultaneously reducing race day traffic congestion.

While York Council has admitted that the new deal is only a small-scale scheme and limited solely to race day shuttle buses, the initiative is only the third to be adopted in the UK.

The agreement was formed using the Local Transport Act of 2008, which allows a local authority to co-ordinate arrangements to promote local services while also reducing traffic congestion and pollution.

The York arrangement will be in place the meeting at the Knavesmire this coming Friday and Saturday.
