Bus gate regulations to be enforced

ENFORCEMENT of the bus and tram gates on Glossop Road in Sheffield city centre is set to begin on Monday next week.

Motorists who drive through the bus and tram gates between 4pm and 6.30pm on weekdays will get warning notices.

Then, from August, those caught passing through the gates illegally will be issued with a Penalty Charge Notice of 60.

Councillor Trevor Bagshaw, Cabinet advisor for transport at Sheffield Council, said: "The key aspect of this scheme is that we make sure that drivers know they are there.

"There will be new signs along with the cameras and we'll also be laying a new surface showing where the gate begins and ends."

Currently, around 440 vehicles a day are using the bus and tram gate illegally during the evenings, delaying public transport.

Drivers approaching the gate from the city centre between 4pm and 6.30pm should turn right off West Street on to Regent Street.
