Buses carry message of access to dental care

Access to NHS dental care is being advertised on buses across Bradford and Airedale as part of a campaign to encourage more people to find a dentist.

Some 40 buses which will travel around the area are carrying the message: "It's a lot easier to see a local NHS dentist than you might think. And it's getting easier every day."

The deputy director of primary care at NHS Bradford and Airedale, Catherine Thatcher, said: "Dental access is much better in Bradford and Airedale but there is a lack of awareness among the general public.

"Everyone should look after their teeth and get regular dental care, and with more dentists taking on patients, it really is easier to book an appointment than most people think.

"Our aim is to offer ongoing preventive dental care to all patients who wish to see an NHS dentist and our high levels of investment have created thousands more places. The new dental practices have substantially increased access and many other practices are also increasing their capacity.

"The practices on www.nhs.uk all take on new patients from time to time. Sometimes people may have to wait until new places become available at the practice of their choice, or choose a practice further from their home, but dental care is available in the district."

By visiting www.nhs.uk and looking on the 'Find dentist' section, people can contact many practices that are accepting new patients.

In the last 18 months three new practices have opened, with a fourth set to open soon in Manningham, near Bradford City Football Club.

The extra places mean that the Primary Care Trust no longer has a list of people waiting to be offered a dental appointment.

People without Internet access can call the patient advice and liaison service (Pals) on 01274 237555 for help with finding an NHS dentist.

Patients who have dental emergencies but do not have their own dentist can call an unscheduled dental care service on 0845 1203 200.
