Business centre first in country

WORKERS at Sheffield's Quadrant business centre have become the first to sign up to a £250,000 scheme to get people in the city cycling instead of driving to work.

Over the next two years the "BikeBoost" project will see 800 commuters given the chance to borrow a bike for three weeks, during which time they will pledge to cycle to work at least 50 per cent of the time.

After the trial period, they will have the opportunity to buy the bikes at a discounted price.

Jim Coleman, manager of the Quadrant centre in Parkway Avenue, said: "Given that the Quadrant was designed to be a 'green' building, it seems appropriate that we should be helping to spearhead environmental initiatives such as getting more people to cycle to work.

"We're always keen to be first in line to try out new ideas."

People working at the Quadrant business centre will be given their new bikes on Thursday, April 15 and Friday, April 16.

All those taking part in the BikeBoost scheme are entitled to two hours of free cycle training provided by Pedal Ready, and those who live and work within Sheffield are entitled to a further two hours.

Sheffield was the first city to sign up to the two-year project.

Councillor Ian Auckland, Sheffield Council's cabinet member for transport, said: "We are committed to encouraging more people to choose the healthy option of cycling to work whenever possible.

"It not only helps with their personal fitness, but a healthy workforce means less sick leave and it's great for the environment too.

"I hope that many businesses around the city will get behind this scheme and encourage their employees to get on their bikes."
