Business leader on city mission

John Longworth, the new director general of the British Chambers of Commerce is in Hull today for a series of meetings with business leaders.

Mr Longworth, who is charged with lobbying the Coalition on behalf of British business, will be talking to the Hull and Humber Chamber of Commerce, Humber LEP and Associated British Ports and will tour the docks. The British Chambers of Commerce represent over 100,000 businesses in the UK.

Mr Longworth, who has held senior roles with Asda, Tesco and the Co-op, will meet Hull and Humber Chamber president Howard O’Neill and chief executive Dr Ian Kelly, but also Lord Haskins, chairman of Humber LEP and Matt Jukes, ABP port director Hull and Goole.

Mr O’Neill said: “This important visit presents the perfect opportunity to bring the national chamber network up to speed on the renewables revolution coming to the Humber.”

The chamber leader added: “The director general is keen to hear for himself about a LEP which is seen by Cabinet Ministers as having some of the most exciting potential of any LEP in the UK.”
