Businesses urged to welcome heroes

BUSINESSES in Hull are being encouraged to offer discounts to service personnel by signing up to the Heroes Welcome campaign.

The initiative, which follows the launch of the Hull Armed Forces and Veterans’ Charter last year, will be highlighted by the city council and 150 Yorkshire Transport Regiment at a business convention. The event will also raise awareness of the skills veterans have which can be transferred to other areas at the two-day Chamber Expo, which begins tomorrow at the Bonus Arena.

Coun Steve Walker said: “Our city is a very friendly city and the Heroes Welcome initiative is another way of extending its traditionally warm welcome to all sections of the community.

“We owe members of the Armed Forces a huge debt of gratitude. The Heroes Welcome scheme is a simple but effective way of showing how we appreciate all they do and have done for our city and our country.”

The Hull charter was the first of its kind to include support for Merchant Navy personnel and fishermen as well as military veterans.
