Butterfly meadow factories plan

Dozens of acres of butterfly-friendly meadows are to be planted in factory grounds and farmland in a scheme to provide habitats for the insects.

Meadows will be planted in factories which make brands such as Kit Kat to attract species such as red admirals, meadow browns and small copper butterflies, Nestlé UK & Ireland said.

By 2015 all of Nestlé’s UK factories will have a meadow, while seven dairy farmers who supply milk for the company’s milk chocolate will also plant wildflower meadows under the scheme.

In total, 75 acres of land – the equivalent of almost 250 football pitches – will be planted with wildflowers to attract 10 species of insects, Nestlé said.
