‘Buzzing’ Moyles takes up the torch for Olympics live on air

Radio 1 DJ Chris Moyles became an Olympic torch-bearer live on his show.

The Leeds-born breakfast show host said the “buzz was amazing” after taking a turn in Aberystwyth in mid-Wales during a location broadcast.

His colleagues, including sidekick “Comedy” Dave Vitty, sounded taken aback when the presenter slipped away and suddenly joined the relay.

Afterwards Moyles said: “I felt so proud. Everyone was waving and cheering. The buzz is amazing but it’s so quick.”

Moyles, wearing the number 006, showed off his rather more streamlined figure after losing several stones in weight in recent months.

Opera singer Bryn Terfel was also among the 84 torchbearers during the journey from Aberystwyth to Machynlleth.

It has also been announced that a Premier League boss, Stoke City’s Tony Pulis, is to be given the honour of carrying the Olympic torch through his club’s home city later this week.

Thought to be the only top flight manager to be given the honour, he will be handed the torch as the nationwide relay leaves Stoke-on-Trent on Thursday.

Pulis, who will take up the flame as it leaves the Potteries Museum and Art Gallery, said he was delighted. He was asked to stand in at the last minute for athlete Emma Jackson,

“This is an historic event for the whole of Britain and it is an immensely proud feeling to be able to say that you are carrying the Olympic torch as part of that build-up,” Pulis said.
