Bypass op patients to take part in charity jog

PATIENTS who have undergone heart bypass surgery have been given permission by their doctors to take part in Sheffield’s Santa Jog to raise cash for the charity which helped them.

Members of Graves’ Heartraisers, who meet at Graves Leisure Centre in Norton, Sheffield, are organising their own team of 50 to participate in the British Heart Foundation’s festive fundraiser.

David Pugsley, 71, of Totley, and Barry Gall, also 71, of Beauchief, are part of the Graves team.

Mr Pugsley, who had a double heart bypass four years ago, will be taking part in the run with Kayna, his 10-year-old Newfoundland dog, which he said has made him go for walks and given him an excuse for being active.

He added: “Heart problems need an early diagnosis and research into the causes and treatment of heart problems.”

Mr Gall had a quadruple coronary bypass in 2009 after suffering chest pains.

He not only volunteers for the Graves’ Heartraisers, but is studying Italian to fulfil a lifelong ambition, including spending 10 weeks at the University of Palermo.

He said: “It’s something I always wanted to do. I now live every day to the full.”

Jo Strong, one of the organisers at the Graves Centre, said: “I think it’s fantastic that so many of our group are taking part. It’s great these people all want to raise money and support the British Heart Foundation.”

The Sheffield Santa Jog starts in Tudor Square at 11am on Sunday and follows a route through the heart of the city.

A Santa suit is provided for all participants, with a standard registration fee of £10 for adults and children over 14, and any children who are participating may do so in fancy dress.
