Call for lorry ban close to heritage spot

Campaigners are urging highways bosses to ban lorries from a rural road near a Leeds tourism jewel, which they say has turned the area into a “rat run”.

People living near the A659 - between Collingham and Harewood - say that an increasing flow of heavy goods vehicles diverting from the A1 is causing constant disruption and safety concerns.

Julian Holmes, from the Collingham Neighbourhood Planning Committee, said: “Many residents in Collingham have simply had enough of these huge lorries thundering through our village. It has been a major concern and we are now determined to make the council listen to our views.

Development spokesman Coun Richard Lewis said HGVs formed only 10 per cent of the vehicles using the stretch of road but promised a review, adding he was “happy to look at any road where residents do perceive a problem” but added: “if you do have a ban, where do you send the traffic? It’s not a simple thing of just slap a ban on it.”
