Call to review traffic after lorry stuck in arch

York Council confirmed yesterday that no structural damage had been caused to Micklegate Bar after the delivery truck became wedged under the gateway on Thursday evening. But the chairman of the Friends of York Walls, Keith Myers, has urged the council to carry out the review to prevent any problems in the future.

“Micklegate Bar is far too important to risk any damage in the future,” he said. “There are serious questions that need to be asked as to how such a large lorry was able to get stuck underneath it.”

Mr Myers also called for Marks & Spencer to make a donation to the Friends organisation as a goodwill gesture to help pay for the upkeep of York’s medieval walls.]

The Yorkshire Post revealed yesterday that police and fire crews were called to free the M&S lorry after it became stuck at 8.20pm. Firefighters had to remove the vehicle’s spoiler to allow it to be freed.

A Marks & Spencer spokeswoman said the company had launched an investigation to establish exactly what happened, but she stressed the driver’s error was not due to an issue with a satellite navigation system.

Micklegate Bar is the most important of York’s four main medieval gateways, and dates from the 12th century.
