Call for spit clampdown

PEOPLE caught spitting in the streets could face formal action under plans to introduce a bylaw unveiled by the mayor of Doncaster Peter Davies yesterday.

The mayor has already had signs put up in Doncaster town centre asking residents not to spit or swear, but said he now wanted to take his campaign further.

He said: “I can’t abide spitting. It’s a filthy habit, it spreads germs and we need legal powers to tackle it.

“I believe the introduction of a bylaw will send a strong message that spitting is unacceptable.”

Doncaster residents will be asked whether they want the council to apply for the new law through an application to the Government.

A two-moth consultation on the issue started yesterday. If it is introduced, those caught would face prosecution and a fine.
