Call to tighten UK's mobility scooter laws

THE Government will today be told to act on concerns over mobility scooters amid concern over accident levels.

A report from the House of Commons Transport Committee says the Government must collect better data and act on the findings of a public consultation exercise.

It could see drivers facing prosecution for careless or dangerous driving, or even require them to take driving tests and buy compulsory insurance.

It follows pressure from Yorkshire MPs Jeff Ennis and Hugh Bayley, who have both had constituents who have been injured by the vehicles.Two-year-old Madison McNair was knocked down by a 70-year-old woman driving a mobility scooter on a pedestrian area in Doncaster.

The select committee says the Government must act after this consultation because Ministers failed to act on the findings of a similar review in 2005.
