Call for UK dementia research boost

A SCIENTIST from South Yorkshire is heading to Westminster today to call for new measures to boost dementia research.

Dr Selina Wray, a dementia researcher from Barnsley, will travel to the House of Commons for the launch of a new report from Alzheimer’s Research UK, urging the Government not to “squander” the UK’s research potential.

The charity has challenged the Government to commit to a national dementia research strategy.

In a new report entitled “Defeating Dementia”, Alzheimer’s Research UK warns that the UK’s dementia knowledge base could be lost unless scientists have better opportunities.

The report will be launched at a Commons event today featuring guests including Alzheimer’s Research UK patron Sir Terry Pratchett.

Dr Wray contributed to the report by giving her views about the barriers facing researchers, as well as the changes that could help dementia research to move forwards.

She said: “There is a huge pool of talented scientists in the UK but few opportunities for a long-term career in dementia research.

“We need to remove barriers to funding and foster an environment where scientists can thrive, or we are in danger of losing these dedicated researchers.”
