Call for witnesses after man dies crossing road

AN elderly man who was struck by a bus in Leeds city centre has died in hospital.

Balwant Singh Bhambra, 78, from the Chapeltown area of the city, died in St James Hospital on Sunday a week after he was struck by a bus as he crossed the road.

He was struck by a number 4 bus as he crossed at the junction between Kirkgate, Call Lane and New York Street at 11.40am on Sunday, April 15.

West Yorkshire Police officers say that they are particularly keen to hear from two female witnesses.

One was a smartly dressed pedestrian who spoke to the bus driver shortly after the collision and the other was a middle-aged woman who was standing on the bus waiting to get off as the incident took place.
