Calling budding movie makers

BUDDING filmmakers are to be given the chance to learn how to make a short film for the London 2012 Olympics as part of this week's Sheffield Doc/Fest.

The film festival will run in the city from tomorrow until Sunday, November 7.

As part of the London 2012

"Cultural Olympiad", one of the activities taking place during the festival will be free filmmaking workshops for those aged 17 to 25.

The workshops are designed to help participants make films to enter the Film Nation: Shorts" competition, which is looking for films that "celebrate the values of the Olympic and Paralympic Games".

The winner's work will be screened at the Games and also online.

Ruth Mackenzie, director of the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad, said: "This programme will deliver a powerful message about our intentions for the Cultural Olympiad.

"Young people and their creative power are developed and celebrated and brought right into the heart of the 2012 Games."

The first free workshop, entitled An Introduction to Directing" will run from 12.15pm to 3.15pm on Saturday, November 6 at HUBS, the former National Centre for Popular Music.

The second workshop, Make a Film in a Day, is specifically aimed at those aged 17 to 19. Also held at HUBS, it will run from 10am to 6pm and focus on story, camera, sound, directing, editing and producing.

Using equipment provided by sponsors Panasonic, the teenagers will make a short film themed around the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
