Calls to boost coastal transport links to cope with wave of new industries

SENIOR politicians have called for a transport strategy employed in London to be transposed to the Yorkshire coast to cope with an unprecedented level of new industry.

Coastal communities in North Yorkshire are facing a massive transition amid plans for a £2bn potash mine along with the arrival of off-shore wind farm industry. The largest off-shore wind farm in the world is due to be built off the Yorkshire coast at Dogger Bank.

Scarborough Borough Council’s cabinet member for strategic planning and regeneration, Coun Derek Bastiman, stressed the infrastructure needs to be improved to cope.

He added: “Greater London has Transport for London – we need to have the same kind of local transport leadership across Yorkshire and Northern Lincolnshire.”

Representations will be made to the All Party Parliamentary Group for Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire when it meets in Westminster next month to discuss the transport challenges in the region.

Coun Bastiman said: “To make the right investment decisions, they need to be taken within the region by those who understand its current economic standing and future potential. With unprecedented economic opportunities facing our coast in the form of offshore wind and the establishment of new potash mine coupled with our already over performing economic profile, we need to ensure that the infrastructure is in place for future growth and success.”
