David Cameron told Yorkshire Post readers the competition between the new arena in Leeds and the existing venue in Sheffield was more likely to grow the market and result in good business for the two.

He was responding to a question from Lorenzo Clark, of Sheffield International Venues, who told the Prime Minister the Leeds develop-ment would result in lost jobs and money in Sheffield.

Mr Cameron said: "I would say is that, of course, having competing venues have impact on each other. But I always found when I worked in business that actually competition stimulates the market.

"I remember when I was working in TV – the fact that we were competing against the BBC who had all this money from the licence fee...

but actually they raised the standards of British TV that ITV could then follow and compete with."
