Cameron's wife to hit campaign trail

THE wife of Tory leader David Cameron will be his secret weapon when he hits the campaign trail for the General Election, he revealed yesterday.

Mr Cameron said his wife of 14 years, Samantha, told him a few days ago that she wanted to "get out there" and do what she could to ensure he is elected Prime Minister.

He told ITV1's Alan Titchmarsh Show: "You are going to see a lot more of her. Britain get ready."

He has already confirmed that 38-year-old Samantha will continue with her work as creative director with upmarket stationers Smythson if they move to 10 Downing Street after a Tory victory in the election expected on May 6.

But he told Titchmarsh: "She said to me the other day when we were having breakfast, 'I know I work hard and I have my own business, but I want you to do this, I want you to win. I'm right behind you.'

"So you are going to see a lot more of her on the campaign trail, so Britain get ready."

Mrs Cameron took time off work to campaign for her husband in the 1997 General Election, when he failed to win Stafford for the Tories, and she has frequently joined him on stage following major speeches.

But unlike Mr Brown's wife Sarah, she has not taken the step of making speeches supporting her husband or developing a significant public profile through charity work and Internet social networks.

Talking about his wife, Mr Cameron said: "She is an amazing woman. She is a very successful career woman. She has helped transform this great British business... She has been a brilliant mother to our children."

Asked if she would continue to work if he became PM, he told Titchmarsh: "She is a working woman and I think she should go on doing that. She loves doing that."

He said his wife did not enjoy joining him on stage at the Tory conference, and sometimes their attempts to kiss for the cameras did not work out.

Mr Cameron said: "It is lethal, because often what happens is you go to kiss someone and they give you their ear and that's not a good look."
