Campaign bid for Barry chart tribute

A CAMPAIGN has been launched to top the music charts with one of Oscar-winning composer John Barry's favourite pieces of work, following his death on Sunday at the age of 77.

The bid to pay tribute to Mr Barry, who grew up in York, is aiming to ensure that his famous composition, We Have All The Time In The World, reaches the number one spot.

The song, performed by Louis Armstrong, featured on the soundtrack for the 1969 James Bond film, On Her Majesty's Secret Service.

Mr Barry, who was best known for his work on the music for the movies about the British secret agent, claimed the song ranked as one of his favourite pieces of work that he had created.

The campaign has spread to the internet with the launch of a Facebook group, which yesterday evening had 280 members.

The site says it is dedicated to creating "a fitting tribute to a great composer" by ensuring the song gets to number one in the charts.

Mr Barry died on Sunday in New York from a heart attack.

He leaves his wife of 33 years, Laurie, four children and five grandchildren.

He claimed his love of the movies was borne out of working in a string of cinemas owned by his family when he was young.

He won two Oscars for Born Free as well as one each for the music on The Lion in Winter, out of Africa and Dances with Wolves.
