Campaign opens Herriot world to next generation

THE son of the best-selling author of the James Herriot books has joined a campaign to promote his late father's legacy to the YouTube generation.

Thirsk vet Alf Wight shot to fame in the 1970s after setting down his experiences working in Yorkshire.

The novels really took off after being adapted for television and film. Now the 1.4m World of James Herriot attraction is seeking to appeal to younger fans who were not born when All Creatures Great and Small was winning over TV audiences.

The Thirsk-based centre has launched it own YouTube channel, allowing visitors to interact with the museum online – getting answers to their questions and taking back-scene tours of the Thirsk centre.

And they will be able to contribute links to their own videos about the life and times of vet cum author Alf Wight. His son Jim will be answering the questions in a series of videos to be shown on the channel.

Earlier this year the museum joined "foursquare" – a mobile phone tourism information service. It is already a member of Twitter and Facebook.

"Social media is opening up a new world for thecentre," said manager Alison Scurrah.

"We hope that by adding Youtube to our network we will access even more Herriotfans both in the UK and abroad. Getting Jim Wight involved in the project is a great coup.

"As we expand our social media network we also hope to add more features to our digital network."
