Campaigners fight plan for new village

campaigners have issued a rallying cry to residents to prevent a beauty spot being transformed into a new village.

Rawdon Billing, near Rawdon, Leeds, has been identified as land that could be used for development as part of an exercise by Leeds City Council.

Furious campaigners have formed an action group to fight the potential impact of development of the greenbelt site owned by the Rawdon Trust.

Briony Spandler, of Rawdon Billing Action Group, urged local people to speak out against the development.

“The potential loss of such a significant and well utilised green asset would be a huge loss to the local community,” she said.

“It defines Rawdon as a village and continues to serve its critical purpose as green belt land, particularly in terms of preventing urban sprawl and the merging of neighbouring settlements.

“It is also widely used by local residents as an important recreational area and is a hotspot for natural habitats.”

The group will hold a public meeting at Rawdon St Peter’s School, on Town Street, tonight at 7pm.
