Canal caretakers unlock historic secrets

WATERWAYS enthusiasts are to be given a chance to experience a behind-the-scenes tour of a restoration and repairs workshop.

The heritage workshop at Stanley Ferry in Wakefield hosted the official launch of the scheme, intended to show off the work that goes into a 50m winter maintenance programme for dozens of historic locks, bridges and aqueducts. In the next few months, more than 100 new handcrafted oak lock gates will also be hung.

The Stanley Ferry workshop is due to hold its open day on Friday February 25 next year.

British Waterways spends about 200m each year maintaining its inland waterway network.
