A NEW walking and cycling route to Leeds city centre university campuses has been created along the canal.

The improved pathway, part of the Aire Valley Towpath, will link the Kirkstall Brewery Halls of Residence to city centre university campuses, and encourage students and commuters to leave their cars at home.

The Aire Valley Towpath Route is along the Leeds & Liverpool canal.

There were substantial improvements made about 10 years ago but some sections were not treated.

This scheme has been an opportunity to improve one of those sections. In particular, two bridges along the towpath have been provided with ramps and the surface throughout has been upgraded.

Coun Richard Lewis, Leeds City Council’s executive board member for development and regeneration said: “It is important that we are able to encourage all commuters into Leeds to try and use more environmentally methods of travelling into the city.”
