Cancer charity gets into gear for flagship Dales cycling event

A NEW addition to the region’s cycling calendar is launched today with a new flagship event through the Yorkshire Dales to raise cash for cancer research.

The charity Yorkshire Cancer Research is organising The Dales Rider starting and finishing in Ilkley on September 1.

Cyclists will be given a choice of a 26-mile challenger route via Pateley Bridge or a gruelling 65-mile run as far as Masham which will pass Brimham Rocks.

Money raised through sponsorship will go towards funding cancer research at Leeds, Bradford, Hull, York and Sheffield universities which have received £30m from the charity on a range of ground-breaking projects in the last five years.

Mark Sutherland, from the Institute of Cancer Therapeutics at Bradford University, said: “With the tough current economic situation fewer people are donating to charities. This, combined with government cutbacks to universities, means less money is available for cancer research.

“The money raised through The Dales Rider will allow us to continue our vital, internationally-recognised research.”

The entry fee is £20 and includes an event T-shirt, fundraising pack, training guide, refreshments and finisher’s certificate.

Ilkley-based JD Cycles and Outdoor is providing financial support and on-the-day assistance.
