Cancer specialist joins 10k run

A LEADING cancer specialist will be swapping his usual ward rounds for something a little more energetic as he puts his best foot forward to take part in Cancer Research UK's Run10k event.

Dr Alan Anthoney, 46, a consultant in medical oncology and senior lecturer at the University of Leeds, carries out work funded by Cancer Research UK and is looking forward to joining over 2,000 other runners at the event at Harewood House on Sunday, October 31.

Dr Anthoney's busy role treating gastrointestinal cancers and overseeing a number of clinical trials across several Leeds hospitals leaves little time for training but he likes to keep as fit as possible. He said: "Many people think cancer is unavoidable and that it's just down to fate, but research is showing that this just isn't true. Up to half of all cancers can be prevented by lifestyle changes and exercise is a great way to reduce the risk.

"Even modest amounts of exercise can protect against bowel and breast cancer."
