Candlelit vigil for laboratory dogs

A CANDLELIT vigil is being held as part of a Europe-wide day of action calling for an end to the breeding of laboratory beagles.

On Saturday supporters will be gathering outside Lush, on Whitefriargate, in Hull city centre from 4pm onwards.

The city is one of 10 in the UK where campaigners will light candles at dusk to highlight the thousands of animals bred for testing at Harlan Laboratories across the world. A dozen dogs a day die in UK laboratories.

Save The Harlan Beagles say their main aim is “to inform the British public – many of whom are unaware ‘man’s best friend’ is still used in fatal experiments to test everything from garden pesticides to food additives – of Harlan’s existence and the fallacy that testing on animals is a ‘necessary evil’”.

The issue has been prominent locally because of the campaign against the expansion of a beagle breeding facility at Grimston on the East Coast. Last year Communities Secretary Eric Pickles rejected an appeal by American-owned B&K Universal to redevelop the facility.

Local campaigners say they are keeping a close eye on the site, which still has permission to breed dogs.
