Canoeist killed in capsize drama on River Aire

A man has drowned after his canoe capsized on the River Aire in Leeds.

He was with a friend in a two-man canoe when it capsized near Ross Mills, Rodley Lane, at the weekend,

Police later confirmed the dead man was Philip Malcolm Reed, 30, from Gipton, Leeds.

It is believed he and the other man were washed over a weir by fast-flowing water after being thrown out of their canoe.

Police and fire crews were alerted at about 4.25pm on Saturday when the second man raised the alarm after struggling to reach the river bank.

He told emergency services he had been unable to find his friend in the river.

The West Yorkshire Police helicopter crew spotted the body of a man and firefighters recovered it from the water at about 4.50pm.

It is understood that the canoe was recovered from near the weir and that the man who died had been wearing a life vest.
